Dehydrated skin is the type of skin that lacks moisture, and one of the reasons for dehydrated skin is the shortage of natural oils (sebum), since the surface layer of sebum plays a great part in conserving whatever moisture is present in the skin. Dehydrated skin usually cracks easily, wrinkles and feels cold and tight. Usually it is older people that are affected by it, but if you naturally have dry skin and leave in dry and cold climates, or exposed to central air or heat these factors will only make the condition worse if appropriate measures are not taken.
Lack of oil and lack of moisture could also be a result of endocrine imbalance and essential oils can help relief that. Key essential oils for bringing balance are lavender, geranium, rose. These are the best to use.
Healing oils for the skin!
Essential oils to use for healing dry and cracked skin are: chamomiles, rose, neroli, sandalwood, patchouli, palmarosa, jasmine, along with the rich carrier oils such as wheat germ, avocado, and shea butter. Essential oils of geranium and lavender are extremely important here, for they have a normalizing action on the body – they have a balancing effect on sebum production – they will increase or reduce the amount of sebum secreted by the little glands beneath your sin, according to what is needed.
The skin needs protection to prevent loss of fluids and frequent application is the key to keeping your skin soft and supple, especially before exposing it to external factors such as heat and cold and wind. Using beeswax in formulation is important – it serves as a barrier and will help prevent moisture loss, while still letting your skin breathe (unlike mineral oil that is use in most conventional products in drug stores – beware ! read you labels!)
The skin can also become dry if the diet is deficient in good fats, such as olive, flaxseed, fish oil, which are loaded with EFA’s especially Omega 3. Avoiding alcohol and smoking is extremely important for both are very dehydrating not only to the skin but to the whole body.
