Sandalwood tree growth to about 30 feet tall and only the inner wood of the tree is used for distillation. There are different species of Sandalwood, the one that should be used, that has the most of its therapeutic properties is Santalum album which grows in East India, Mysore region. Often it is called Sandalwood Mysore.
This oil is rich, viscous with a woody, sweet and somewhat spicy aroma. It mixes perfectly with rose and geranium.
Best uses of sandalwood are for it is anti-spasmodic and expectorant action, which is very useful during dry, spasmodic coughs, and during bronchitis. Its sedative in nature and very useful for insomnia or restless sleep, especially if mixed together with neroli and ylang-ylang.
It is the most useful oil for dry, dehydrated and chapped skin and it is a natural soothing antiseptic for acne skin, and is of importance to any other skin type for its moisturizing properties.
